“What Is This That Stands Before Me?” brings together a group of fourteen international artists of different generations working in a wide range of media. The exhibition presents a variety of positions that evoke a sense of mystery in their pursuits, expressed through painting, drawing, photography, print, sculpture, video, and performance. The artworks may engage a certain territory of the unknown, or even the unexplainable, where gestures of risk are tempered by a patient hand, body, or spirit.

Serving as the exhibition title are the lyrics Black Sabbath chanted at the very beginning of their self-titled song that was recorded fifty-five years ago. These lyrics still resonate today and are worth repeating again in the Eagle Rock district of Los Angeles, at a time when political tumult and environmental uncertainties warrant caution and resilience for what lies ahead, what stands before us.

This one-week exhibition marks this unique moment in 2025, and is dedicated to Los Angeles.
