On September 20, 2023 Germany’s Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning (BBR) in Berlin hosted a “Richtfest” (topping-out ceremony) for its new extension of The German Bundestag, which features a new permanent commission by John von Bergen titled “Wandlung” – a 45 foot / 14 meter high relief that was cast in concrete, spanning 4 floors through the newly renovated building at Neustädtische Kirchstrasse 4-5, Berlin.
This ceremony was greeted by BBR President Petra Wesseler who spoke of von Bergen’s project (English below):
“Die Arbeit bleibt durch sein markantes bildliches Motiv, welches surrealistische Züge hat, in deutlicher Erinnerung. Das einfache, aber gleichzeitig motivisch verdrehte Fahnenmotiv ermöglicht in seiner eigenartigen Widersprüchlichkeit eine komplexe assoziative Auseinandersetzung der Betrachter. Beispielsweise ist darin der Übergang zwischen einer staatlichen oder gesellschaftlichen Identität und einer Nächsten lesbar.
Die Bildsprache (Relief / Versteinerung) weist auf die historische Dimension der verschiedenen staatlichen gesellschaftlichen Ordnungen hin oder auch auf die wechselvolle Geschichte des Gebäudes selbst. Die Kontinuität der Stoffbahn oder die Lesart, als von beiden Seiten in unterschiedliche Richtung gezerrt – möglicherweise als Zerreißprobe – ist möglich.
Die Form der Ausführung, insbesondere die Qualität der effektiven Integration in die monolithische Betonwand, aber auch die bildhauerische Durcharbeitung des Motivs sind Fragen, mit denen die Jury sich gern auseinander gesetzt hat.
Zu loben ist der Aspekt der Einführung eines eigenständigen künstlerischen Motivs, welches eine gute Balance zwischen der assoziativen thematischen Zuordnungsfähigkeit und einer freien künstlerischen Assoziation besitzt.”
“The work remains clearly remembered due to its striking pictorial motif, which has surrealistic features. The simple but at the same time twisted flag motif, in its strange contradiction, enables a complex associative discussion by the viewer. For example, the transition between a state or social identity and a neighbor can be read.
The imagery (relief / petrification) points to the historical dimension of the various state social orders or to the eventful history of the building itself. The continuity of the fabric or the reading as being pulled in different directions from both sides – possibly as a test of endurance – is possible.
The form of execution, in particular the quality of the effective integration into the monolithic concrete wall, but also the sculptural development of the motif are questions that the jury was happy to address. The aspect of the introduction of an independent artistic motif, which has a good balance between the associative thematic ability and a free artistic association, is to be praised.”
