The Wandlung Story

January 14, 2024

In “The ‘Wandlung’ Story”, artist John von Bergen explains his ambitious new 50-foot-high concrete installation titled “Wandlung” (“transformation”) that was commissioned as an extension of The German Bundestag at the historical Neustädtische-Kirchstrasse 4-5 in the center of Berlin. Originally built in 1887 as a Prussian army surplus store by architects von der Hude & Hennicke, it became the home for a local craft guild after WWI. In 1977 it became the seat of the U.S. Consulate to the GDR. Today, its function is transforming once again, as is its interior. But its exterior retains much of its original character, along with many bullet-holes from WWII – “scars” that von Bergen strategically replicated and incorporated into his artwork. This film aims to share in the most accessible way the unique background story to this building, the complexity and technical development of von Bergen‘s vision, and the contextual arrival of one of the newest and most ambitious art installations in Berlin. The film expands our understanding of its context while raising questions of power in our society and if monumentality in art and architecture can maintain relevance in the twenty-first century. Inspired by our collective relationships to politics, history, monuments, and the cultural landscape of Berlin, we can reflect on which collective memories are worth preserving.
